WHY DID GOD CREATE MANKIND?
Was the whole physical universe created and fine tuned just to be a suitable home for mankind?
Many scientists, both Christian and non-Christian, have discovered that the whole universe seems to be fine tuned to an extremely preposterous degree to allow man and the animal kingdom to exist on the earth. The amazing precision of this design is called the Anthropic Principle. Many Christians believe that the entire universe was created just so that man could exist on the earth. If that is true then God certainly went to extreme lengths to provide a place for man to live. That greatly magnifies the importance of the creation of mankind. That leads to the question, “Why was it so important to God to create mankind?” Why does Psalm 66 say, “Come and see what God has done, his awesome deeds for mankind!” Let’s look at some of the reasons the Bible gives for the creation of man by God.
What does the Bible say about this?
We were created as a gift to Jesus from the Father
Col 1:16 For by him all things were created: things in heaven and on earth, visible and invisible, whether thrones or powers or rulers or authorities; all things were created by him and for him.
John 6:39 And this is the will of him who sent me, that I shall lose none of all that he has given me, but raise them up at the last day.
John 17:6, 24. “I have revealed you to those whom you gave me out of the world. They were yours; you gave them to me and they have obeyed your word.
We were created to be the bride of Christ (symbolic)
Eph 5:31-32 “For this reason a man will leave his father and mother and be united to his wife, and the two will become one flesh. This is a profound mystery—but I am talking about Christ and the church.
Rev 19:7 Let us rejoice and give him glory! For the wedding of the Lamb has come, and his bride has made herself ready.
We were created to be sons of God (symbolic) for his own good pleasure (if we are the bride of Christ we are then the son-in-law or daughter-in-law of the Father)
Eph 1:4-10 4 For he chose us in him before the creation of the world to be holy and blameless in his sight. In love 5 he predestined us for adoption to sonship through Jesus Christ, in accordance with his pleasure and will— 6 to the praise of his glorious grace, which he has freely given us in the One he loves. 7 In him we have redemption through his blood, the forgiveness of sins, in accordance with the riches of God’s grace 8 that he lavished on us. With all wisdom and understanding, 9 he made known to us the mystery of his will according to his good pleasure, which he purposed in Christ, 10 to be put into effect when the times reach their fulfillment—to bring unity to all things in heaven and on earth under Christ.
We were created to do good works
Eph 2:10 For we are God's workmanship, created in Christ Jesus to do good works, which God prepared in advance for us to do.
We were created as a dwelling place for God
Eph 2:22 And in him you too are being built together to become a dwelling in which God lives by his Spirit.
1 Cor 3:16 Don't you know that you yourselves are God's temple and that God's Spirit lives in you?
1 Cor 6:19 Do you not know that your body is a temple of the Holy Spirit, who is in you, whom you have received from God? You are not your own;
[This applies only to those who invite him to live in them; only to believers in and followers of Jesus]
We were created to share in the glory of the Lord Jesus
2 Thess 2:13-14 But we ought always to thank God for you, brothers loved by the Lord, because from the beginning God chose you to be saved through the sanctifying work of the Spirit and through belief in the truth. 14 He called you to this through our gospel, that you might share in the glory of our Lord Jesus Christ.
James 1:18 He chose to give us birth through the word of truth, that we might be a kind of firstfruits of all he created.
2 Cor 5:4-5 4 For while we are in this tent, we groan and are burdened, because we do not wish to be unclothed but to be clothed with our heavenly dwelling, so that what is mortal may be swallowed up by life. 5 Now it is God who has made us for this very purpose and has given us the Spirit as a deposit, guaranteeing what is to come.
We were created for the glory of God
Isa 43:6-7 (speaking of the re-gathering & restoration of Israel) 6 Bring my sons from afar and my daughters from the ends of the earth---- 7 everyone who is called by my name, whom I created for my glory, whom I formed and made. (Verse 3 makes it obvious that this is Jesus speaking. Compare to Col 1:15-16.)
Eph 1:11-13 11 In him we were also chosen, having been predestined according to the plan of him who works out everything in conformity with the purpose of his will, 12 in order that we, who were the first to put our hope in Christ, might be for the praise of his glory. 13 And you also were included in Christ when you heard the message of truth, the gospel of your salvation.
We were created to demonstrate God’s wisdom to his angels in heaven
Eph 3:9-10 9 and to make plain to everyone the administration of this mystery, which for ages past was kept hidden in God, who created all things. 10 His intent was that now, through the church, the manifold wisdom of God should be made known to the rulers and authorities in the heavenly realms,
[Apparently angels can either see or are kept aware in some way of what is happening on earth; see 1 Cor 4:9, Eph 3:8-12, 1 Pet 1:12].
SUMMARY: WHY WE WERE CREATED BY GOD
This is a question that has perplexed man since the very beginning. However, the Creator himself has given us the answer. We were created to be a gift to Jesus. In Jesus high, holy prayer in John 17 we see in several places that believers are a gift to Jesus the Son from the Father. However, God gave us to Jesus with a stipulation; Jesus had to pay for us (Eph 2:8-10, 2 Peter 2:1, 1 Cor 6:19-20, 7:23, Rom 6:22-23). Jesus did just that, he paid for us in full. Jesus last word on the cross was the Roman word “tetelestai,” (Ps 22:31, John 19:30), which means “paid in full.” In Biblical times, this same word was written across the pardon of those being released from bondage or prison, “paid in full.” Our only requirement is to accept the free gift that has already been bought for us and paid for in full. As Heb 10:10 and several other scriptures say, the price was paid “once for all,” (Heb 7:23-28, 9:11-15, 23-28, 10:1-18). Gal 4:6-7 says that we were not bought to be slaves, but co-heirs. Gal 5:1 continues by saying that Jesus bought us and then set us free. Rom 6:22-23 says that we voluntarily enslave ourselves to God and by so doing we become co-heirs of the whole kingdom, forever. Eph 2:8-10 and James 1:17-18 say further that the salvation we receive through Jesus is a free gift given to us so that we might continue the good work that Jesus began.
Our next question might be, “Why would God give us to Jesus as a gift?” What would God’s purpose be in doing that? I believe the Bible also gives us the answer to that. We will one day become the “bride” of Christ, in a spiritual sense. We will be his full time companion and share our love with him as he shares his love with us. Just as a reasonable earthly couple would not get married unless each partner loved the other of their own “free will,” so will it be with our heavenly marriage. Those who will make up the bride will only be allowed to do so if they have demonstrated their free-will love of Jesus by what they have said and done. Jesus has already done his part in demonstrating his love for us by his “one time“ sacrifice. We will understand what all of this really means when we finally get to heaven and the wedding takes place. Until then we can only ponder over the scriptures and use our imaginations.
Being the bride of Christ leads us to the ultimate reason given in Rev 1:6. We were created to be a kingdom and priests to serve Jesus’ Father for ever and ever.
The next important question is,
“Do you believe that God created mankind and the whole of the physical universe as the Bible claims or that it just evolved into being in some mind boggling way?”
You must decide for yourself!
WHY DID JESUS COME TO EARTH?
Luke 4:18-19 tells us that early in his ministry Jesus went to Nazareth and proclaimed in the synagogue that he was the Messiah and announced what he would accomplish during his ministry on earth. He was reading from Isaiah 61:1-2 and said that he was the fulfillment of this prophecy. Let us compare those two passages to see what Jesus said he would accomplish on earth. These two passages read somewhat differently since one is a translation and the other a translation of a translation. However, as you will see the meaning is still the same in each one.

There are many scriptures that clearly give us reasons for why Jesus came to earth. Let us review some of them and place them in the five categories that we saw Jesus using in Luke 4:18-19.
1. To proclaim the gospel to the people of earth who were totally incapable of getting to heaven.
Mark 1:38; to preach the gospel to the world
2. To take those Old Testament saints being held in Abraham’s Bosom to heaven.
Matt 16:28; to take those in Abraham’s Bosom to heaven
Eph 4:7-10; to take the captive saints to heaven and give them gifts
3. To remove the mental blindness or darkness from people so they could have truth and knowledge.
John 9:39-41: to provide sight to the blind and blindness to those can see (See Rom 11:7-11)
John 18:37, 14:6; to testify to the truth; Jesus is the truth
John 15:12-14; 1 Jn 3:16; to follow Jesus command to love others as he loved us, so much that we would give our very lives for them
4. To relieve anxieties about the afterlife and bondage to the law and sin. To obtain victory over sin in the sinless life that he lived and victory over evil in his death.
Rom 8:3-4; to be a sin offering
Heb 2:9-18; to become like his brothers in every way (to walk a mile in their shoes), in order that he might become a merciful and faithful high priest in service to God, and that he might make atonement for the sins of the people
Heb 9:15; to mediate a new covenant, that those who are called may receive the promised eternal inheritance - now that he has died as a ransom to set them free from the sins committed under the first covenant
Heb 10:19-22; to shed his blood for us so that it might be sprinkled upon our hearts to cleanse them from sin so that we might be able to enter into the presence of God
1 John 3:5; to take away our sins
5. To announce the time when the will of God would finally be accomplished, in both first and second comings.
Matt 1:21; to save people from their sins
Luke 19:10; to seek and save the lost
John 3:16, Hosea 6:6; to die for us that we might have eternal life in heaven with him
John 10:7-10; to provide the way to heaven, to provide for an abundant life
John 12:26-27; to die that his followers might live
John 12:47-50; to save the world
Rom 11:11; to bring salvation to the Gentiles and eventually the Jews
Rom 15:8; to become a servant of the Jews in order to confirm the promises made to the patriarchs regarding bringing salvation to the Gentiles
1 Cor 15:20-23; to defeat death for us; for as in Adam all die so in Christ will all be made alive, first Christ, the firstfruits, and then when he comes those who belong to him
Gal 3:14, 4:4; to die on a cross in order to redeem the lost, and thus allow the blessings promised to Abraham to be extended to the Gentiles; the promise of the Spirit to those of faith
1 Tim 1:15; to save even the worst of sinners
Heb 10:9-10; to do God’s will, to make sinful man holy through the sacrifice of his body, done ONCE FOR ALL
1 John 3:7-8; to destroy the Devil’s work (sin)
John 12:16, 15:25; to fulfill Old Testament prophecies of Jesus first coming
Matt 3:11-12: to fulfill what John the Baptist said about him; that he would gather the wheat into the barns and burn the chaff
SUMMARY
Because of sin nobody can live a life worthy of being in the presence of a perfect and holy God. Jesus came to earth to present the way to defeat sin and its consequences for everyone, both Jew and Gentile. He came to walk a mile in our shoes and to live the perfect life for us that we cannot possibly live for ourselves. At the end of his perfect life on earth, Jesus voluntarily sacrificed his life as a “one time” penalty for all of the sins of everyone, past, present and future. The blood shed by Jesus for our sins covers our sins and allows God to now see us as holy and perfect (even though we are not), and thus fit for being in his presence. Jesus defeated death for us when he arose from the tomb, and thereby made it possible for us to also defeat death through him. Jesus is the way, the truth and the life. The only way that we can get to heaven is through him. If we become a devoted follower of Jesus, his death for our sins and his resurrection to life make it possible for us to live with him in the presence of the Father in heaven for all of eternity.
To put all that Jesus did for us into a broader perspective, to answer why he did what he did and not just what and how he did what he did we must consider why Jesus created the universe. What is the ultimate purpose of the universe and the life that it contains? As we have said in several of our other studies on creation and God’s plan, we have concluded that at some point in the distant past God the Father chose to give Jesus, his Son, a gift. The Father required that Jesus create the gift, interact with the gift, eventually become like the gift for a few years, pay for the gift, give the gift a set of instructions to live by, set up a selection algorithm, come to earth to claim the gift, again live on earth with the gift for a period of 1000 years, and finally create a new heaven and new earth in which Jesus and his gift, his bride, will reside with God and the Spirit for eternity. This is a very complicated scenario but it required Jesus to do several of the things that we have just mentioned during a lifetime on earth as he became like man for a short time, walked a mile in man’s shoes, lived a perfect sinless life and finally died as a perfect lamb as a sacrifice for man’s sins, once for all sins. In doing all of this Jesus accomplished several things including:
- Clarified his and his Father’s requirements for entrance into heaven,
- Became a human like us for a period so that he could be a blameless judge,
- Defeated the forces of evil for us and died for our sins,
- Reopened the doors to heaven so that our spirits now go there when we die,
- Became the firstfruits for us, the first to have a glorified, resurrected body, just like the one we as believers will have one day,
- Laid out his future plan for how he will return for his bride one day, judge the world, and live with us on earth for 1000 years, followed by an eternity in a new heaven and new earth.
These were all implied in the five points of Luke and Isa that we studied above. Let me condense our summary again:
Key reasons that Jesus came to earth were to
1. Make it possible for mankind to be able to qualify for entry into heaven by paying the price required for sins to be forgiven once for all, and
2. Reinforce to man what the selection algorithm would be for gaining entry into heaven and becoming a part of his future bride.
This paper is to be studied in concert with my paper titled, “Why Did God Create Mankind?” I would suggest that you might want to study that paper also to get further insights into why Jesus came to earth.
