JESUS WAS “THE HOLY ONE” IN BOTH OLD AND NEW TESTAMENTS

We have already seen that Jesus was the central person in both the Old and New Testaments. For those who might need further proof that Jesus was the God of the Jews in the Old Testament and was the same God-man who later made an appearance to the Jews as their Messiah, let’s keep piling up evidence. There are many references in the Old Testament to “The Holy One of Israel” and “The Holy One.” Likewise there are many references in the New Testament to “The Holy One.” I have compiled many of the scriptures which use these phrases below. I have also compiled lists of the characteristics assigned to “The Holy One” in each of the Testaments. Let’s read through the scriptures and discuss what we find. Let’s see if we cannot agree that it is Jesus in both Testaments.

THE HOLY ONE IN THE NEW TESTAMENT WAS JESUS CHRIST

  • Mark 1:23-24   23 Just then a man in their synagogue who was possessed by an evil spirit cried out, 24 "What do you want with us, Jesus of Nazareth? Have you come to destroy us? I know who you are-- the Holy One of God!"
  • John 6:68-69 68 Simon Peter answered him, "Lord, to whom shall we go? You have the words of eternal life. 69 We believe and know that you are the Holy One of God."

  • Acts 13:35-37 35 So it is stated elsewhere: "'You will not let your Holy One see decay.'
36 "For when David had served God's purpose in his own generation, he fell asleep; he was buried with his fathers and his body decayed. 37 But the one whom God raised from the dead did not see decay.
  • Acts 2:26-27   26 Therefore my heart is glad and my tongue rejoices; my body also will live in hope, 27 because you will not abandon me to the grave, nor will you let your Holy One see decay.
  • Ps 16:9-10 9 Therefore my heart is glad and my tongue rejoices; my body also will rest secure, 10 because you will not abandon me to the grave, nor will you let your Holy One see decay.

I will turn the desert into pools of water, and the parched ground into springs. 19 I will put in the desert the cedar and the acacia, the myrtle and the olive. DISCUSSION: It’s completely obvious that “The Holy One” in the New Testament is Jesus Christ. It is also apparent that New Testament authors knew that “The Holy One” in the Old Testament was also Jesus. Luke indicates that Acts 13:35-36 is fulfillment of Ps 16:9-10. This is the most obvious indication that Jesus is “The Holy One” of the Old Testament. In the above list of 43 characteristics ascribed to “The Holy One” in the Old Testament, I have listed New Testament fulfillments for many of them through Jesus Christ. I should point out that many of the instances may also point to the Father God being “The Holy One.” The point I want to make is that both the Father and the Son were God of Israel. They are both Yahweh and are “One.” The great mistake of the Jews was and is in not recognizing Jesus as the Savior and Messiah sent from God and as God.

WHAT THE TERM “SON OF GOD” MEANS

When Greek words are translated into English we sometimes get a confusing or inaccurate translation because there may not be a matching English word. For example, the Greeks had several different words that are all translated “love” in English, even though all of the Greek words have quite different meanings. Another word that can lead to confusion on our part is the Greek word which is translated as “son.” If we think that Jesus, who is called the “Son of God,” is the offspring of God the Father we have come to an inaccurate conclusion. Jesus is called the Son of God in John 3:16 and many other places in the Bible. What did the Greek word that is translated as “son” mean to the Greeks? It is Strong’s word 5207 and means “figurative kinship.” Miethe’s Compact Dictionary of Doctrinal Words says that the word means that Jesus shares the same nature with God the Father, and that the word does not mean “son” in a physical sense. Jesus was not conceived or created by God the Father; in fact, God the Son has always been and will always be. He is eternal. 1 John 5:20 says that Jesus is the true God and eternal life. In Phil 2:6, Paul says this of Jesus, “Who, being in very nature God.” In Heb 1:6-9, God the Father twice calls Jesus “God.” Thus we see that “son of God” means of the same nature as God or of the same order as God. Jesus was of the same nature or order as God the Father. They were the very same in their basic nature.
Again, we could be confused when we read in Heb 1:6 that God the Father brings his “firstborn” into the world. The Greek word used here refers to priority of position rather than of origin. Col 1:15-18 says that Jesus is the “firstborn” over all creation because he created all things, and that he is the “firstborn” from the dead because when he voluntarily became a man and sacrificed his earthly life he was the first to arise from the dead with a glorified body. This is explained in 1 Cor 15:20-23 and 42-49. All believers will one day have a body like this. Likewise, Rom 8:29 calls Jesus “the firstborn of many brothers.”
Was Jesus presented as the “son of God” in the Old Testament? Yes. One such place is in Prov 30 where we read the following in verses 2-6,
2 Surely I am only a brute, not a man; I do not have human understanding. 3 I have not learned wisdom, nor have I attained to the knowledge of the Holy One. 4 Who has gone up to heaven and come down? Whose hands have gathered up the wind? Who has wrapped up the waters in a cloak? Who has established all the ends of the earth? What is his name, and what is the name of his son? Surely you know! 5 “Every word of God is flawless; he is a shield to those who take refuge in him. 6 Do not add to his words, or he will rebuke you and prove you a liar.”
