General Characteristics of Heaven
Heaven is the abode of all three persons making up our triune God, the creator and sustainer of the universe. We can expect the general characteristics of heaven to reflect what God tells us about himself. Since God is love we can expect heaven to be a place characterized by love and love alone. There will be no hate, no sin, no selfishness, no pain, no sorrow, etc. It will be a place where we honor God above everything else; we will worship and adore him with praise, with song, with service. Likewise we will also love everyone else who is in heaven with us; we will share good stories, good fun, good music, good food, lots of new adventures, new explorations, etc. God will likely let us be creative as well. We will not have any temptation whatsoever to do anything evil or harmful. We will simply not want to do those things in our new nature.
Since Jesus is characterized by light, we can expect heaven to be full of wonderful expressions of light. Revelation tells us that we will not need the sun for light since the light of Jesus will illuminate all of heaven. There will not be any night or any darkness. In our new bodies we will operate on a new energy source that will never run out or run down. Our bodies will not need food, drink and oxygen to provide us with energy since we will be powered by the energy that even now fills all of the universe below and heaven above. The light in heaven will be indescribably beautiful. The heavenly city, the New Jerusalem, will be adorned with all sorts of beautiful jewels and the streets will be made of pure gold. Can you imagine the beauty of the light of Jesus reflecting off of and through all of these cut stones of every color imaginable. Plus the throne of God is surrounded by a rainbow. Every shade of color imaginable will flow from the throne of God and the beauty will be breathtaking.
What about music in heaven? We certainly know that God loves wholesome music. He blessed King David with a special gift to create music. We have always heard of the angelic choirs. We love two, three and four part harmonies with lots of background music so very much. Can you imagine the music in heaven? How about 49 part harmonies, harmonics that we have never even dreamed about? Personally, I cannot wait to hear that. I hope to even be a part of it one day. The concerts will be fabulous, with our God seated in his special chamber. Do you suppose we might even hear a Father, Son, Holy Spirit trio singing for us?
Our hearts will be always and constantly filled with peace, love and joy. These deep inner feelings will give us so much peace, love and joy that we will constantly want to be sharing them with everyone that we come in contact with, including with God himself.
All of our questions will be answered. Can you imagine going up to Daniel and talking about his experience in the lion’s den, to Isaiah and asking him how God relayed Isaiah 53 to him and if he really understood what it was all about, to Ezekiel and asking him what those puzzling flying machines that he saw really were, to Eve and asking her about the serpent, to Paul to discuss the ship wreck, to Jesus to thank him for what he did for us. You likely will be able to do all of these things. You will meet them all and be able to speak with them as long as you want to. There may even be regular conventions where our heroes of old will present talks where they reveal many interesting details that have long been forgotten. All of this will be for the glory of God. He will likely enjoy it even more than we will.
Moreover, heaven will not be a boring experience that drags on for all of eternity, but a place of eternal loving, worshipping, sharing, experiencing, etc. always with a heart full of thanksgiving to God for who he is and for what he has done for us. The wonderful possibilities that await us in heaven are boundless. Both Paul and John were shown visions of heaven and both of them could not wait to get there. Paul was so anxious to leave his body and be with Jesus, and John ends the Revelation by saying, “Come quickly, Lord Jesus.” Apparently Jesus wants his kingdom to come quickly also because in the Lord’s Prayer that he taught us he includes the phrase that we repeat each time we pray his prayer, “Thy Kingdom Come.”
